La dehydration it consists in the loss of more fluids than you have taken. This dangerous condition, if underestimated, can have a variety of causes including heat, medications, digestive disorders and strain due to physical activity.

Coconut water

THEcoconut water it's great to drink when you're dehydrated, as it provides much-needed water, electrolytes, and some carbohydrates. 

When you are dehydrated, your body needs more than just liquid to regain its balance. In most cases, you also need to replenish electrolytes which are lost in body fluids, such as sweat and urine.

Electrolytes are essential minerals for performing important functions, such as maintaining a regular heart rhythm. Some of the most common are:

  • sodium
  • football
  • magnesium
  • potassium

Second USDA, a 1-cup (237 ml) serving of unsweetened coconut water contains 9% of the daily value of potassium and has only 45 calories.

A little study found that coconut water replenishes fluids lost during exercise, just as efficiently as sports drinks. However, participants more often reported feeling bloated and having increased stomach pain after consuming coconut water. So if you warn nausea or vomiting, be sure to sip your drink slowly so as not to upset the intestinal flora. 



Furthermore, we recommend that you always check the ingredients, especially the percentage of added sugars or flavors.

Watermelon and melon

Fruits and vegetables have a high water content and they can be a great option; the best fruit in this case is watermelon and melon.

A 1-cup (152-gram) serving of diced raw watermelon, for example, has been shown to contain nearly 92% (139 ml) of water. The melon, on the other hand, has about 90% water content in the same amount.

Gazpacho

Il gazpacho is a very popular raw tomato and vegetable soup in Spain and Portugal.

Its main ingredient, tomatoes are among the most hydrating foods; in fact, in addition to their water content, equal to 94%, i raw tomatoes provide 9% of the daily potassium requirement and only 33 calories in each 1-cup (180-gram) serving.

According to the researchers, getting enough potassium is important for managing blood pressure and warding off heart disease.

To make gazpacho, you can blend raw tomatoes with cucumbers, some sweet pepper, olive oil, garlic, onion and a pinch of salt and pepper; in no time and with a minimum of effort you can have a refreshing and moisturizing dish.

Smoothies

Smoothies are perfect for dehydration; they typically have a liquid base, such as milk, juice, or unsweetened iced tea, plus a handful of fruits and vegetables, sometimes even yogurt for an even creamier texture. In case of intolerance you can also use vegetable milk or yogurt.

Berry smoothies contain a lot Vitamin C, essential for a healthy and strong immune system; a great option if your dehydration is due to a fever or infection.

Tzatziki sauce

La tzatziki is a Greek sauce made with yogurt and cucumber, two foods containing water.

Yogurt alone contains about 85% of it, and has the same benefits as milk, it also contains some probiotics, which are good intestinal friendly bacteria. Even the cucumber it is moisturizing, because like yogurt it is composed of 85% water.

If you want to prepare tzatziki at home, avoid filtering the cucumber to have a more fluid consistency, and keep all the water content; serve with crudités, such as carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices.
