These Magellanic penguins were malnourished and nearly dying, but they were rescued by extraordinary men

After months of rehabilitation, 14 Magellanic penguins released by the Mundo Marino association in Argentina.

They suffered from malnutrition, hypothermia and dehydration, but are now back in the wild and are swimming peacefully in their natural habitat: the waters off the Atlantic coast of Argentina. They are the fourteen Magellanic penguins saved by the Mundo Marino Foundation.

The specimens had been found in poor condition in February 2021 and only a few days ago, after months of treatment and a rehabilitation process, they experienced the thrill of diving into the ocean, accompanied on the beach of San Clemente del Tuyu, in the east. Argentina, by the team that has treated them in recent months.

The reintegration of the fourteen penguins was carried out respecting their migratory habits, taking into account the routes, the time of year and the general conditions of the group in question.

Every month at the Fondazione Mundo Marino Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, specimens of various animal species (mainly sea lions, penguins and to a lesser extent sea turtles) are treated, rehabilitated and reintroduced into their natural environments.

The rehabilitation processes, in addition to helping the conservation of wildlife, generate a double benefit. On the one hand they constitute a source for research on species, on the other hand they allow the training of technicians and professionals from different scientific disciplines, who acquire experience for the rehabilitation of marine fauna.

Unfortunately, every year thousands of Magellanic penguins run aground along the coast of South America, from the north of Argentina to the south of Brazil, and are unable to return to Patagonia, the place where they usually breed, and which is located in more than 1500 kilometers away.

According to a study that monitored the migratory and underwater habits of 14 Magellanic penguins, during their non-reproductive period, penguins spend most of their wintering in the sea, where they are exposed to a range of threats caused by the action of being. human.

These factors include water pollution, caused by oil from shipping and extraction platforms, and risks associated with fishing, such as involuntary capture or depletion of predatory species.
