Mold is nothing more than a mushroom which manifests itself in the form of green or black spots on the surface of walls or ceilings, on the edges of windows, on furniture or carpets, in the bathroom, in the kitchen and wherever there is a high rate of humidity. The causes of its spread can also be attributed to incorrectly installed or ineffective heating systems. But this is not the only discomfort. Mold gives off toxins in the air, harmful to humans: their effects are manifested through a weakening of the immune system and with the appearance of breathing difficulties.

There are many do-it-yourself methods to eliminate it, but without a doubt one thing is certain: you don't need bleach as many believe! Its components, in fact, can lead the mold to spread further, making the problem worse instead of solving it.

Measures to reduce mold exposure

  • make sure the exterior walls, foundations, attics and attic are insulated and well ventilated
  • try to keep ahumidity less than 50%
  • make sure there is no earth or other material that can drain moisture in direct contact with the walls of the house
  • do not use rugs or carpets in areas with high humidity such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms
  • do not leave clothes hanging out to dry for a long time in closed, poorly ventilated areas
  • try to eliminate phenomena of condensation which often cause humidity; in the presence of condensation it is advisable to ventilate the room frequently
  • eliminate mold stains with special water-based anti-mold dyes
  • ensure the correct maintenance of humidifiers and air conditioners and of the mechanical ventilation system, in particular of the external vents and filters
  • regularly clean the gaskets of refrigerators; frequently empty and clean water trays in self-defrosting refrigerators (Read here: How to clean refrigerator seals: tips, tricks and why you should do it more often)
  • regularly wash the shower curtains, sink, tub and bathroom and kitchen walls, perhaps with this homemade bleach
  • limit the number of ornamental plants (molds can be airborne when the plants are repotted, moved or watered, and in any case increase the ambient humidity)
  • Air purifiers equipped with suitable filters can be effective in removing fungal spores
