Is it possible to keep plants in the bedroom? And if so, which ones to choose? Do they really take away oxygen at night?

Is it possible to keep plants in the bedroom? And if so, which ones to choose? Do they really take away oxygen at night?

Plants grown in the apartment bring nature into our homes, furnish, improve mood and help make the air cleaner. Exist plants that we can also hold in bedroom? Many would say no, as they are convinced that bedroom plants are bad for you, but is that really the case?

Can we keep the plants in the bedroom?

The reason why many people find it harmful to keep plants in the bedroom is related to a simplification of the process chlorophyll photosynthesis.

The reactions of the photosynthesis they allow plants to obtain energy to incorporate atmospheric carbon dioxide into organic skeletons in the Calvin-Benson cycle, in which sugars and starch are produced. In this process the plant uses water and light, it consumes carbon dioxide and releases oxygen: this reaction occurs mainly during the day, as it requires solar energy.

Alongside photosynthesis, however, two other processes take place which instead of consuming carbon dioxide they produce it: respiration and photorespiration.

La breathing it is a continuous process that includes all the oxidative reactions of the organic substance to produce energy and intermediates that enter other metabolic pathways. In practice, the sugars and starch produced thanks to photosynthesis are then demolished to obtain energy and to produce metabolites useful for the plant, such as lipids and amino acids, chlorophyll and other pigments, flavonoids, terpenes, etc.

La photorespiration instead it is a process that overlaps the carboxylation that occurs in the Calvin cycle. Through photorespiration the plant it consumes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, decreasing the efficiency of photosynthesis. This happens because rubisco, the enzyme involved in the first reaction of the Calvin cycle, can catalyze both carboxylation - which uses CO2 - and oxygenation which uses oxygen.

This is not a big problem for plants that live in temperate climates, but for plants that live in tropical or desert regions it could be because in some environmental conditions, photorespiration increases. However, the plants that live in these areas have adopted some strategies to adapt to the environment and make photosynthesis more efficient.

Although respiration and photorespiration release carbon dioxide, plants generally fix CO2 in greater quantities than that released into the atmosphere, so there is no reason not to keep plants in the bedroom.

What plants can we keep in the bedroom

As we have seen, we can keep plants in the bedroom without problems, because despite the processes of respiration and photorespiration they release CO2, the quantity of carbon dioxide absorbed by plants is greater than that released into the air.

There are also plants which, in order to adapt to the surrounding environment and to minimize photorespiration, have developed effective strategies to concentrate carbon dioxide in the rubiscus site and thus make photosynthesis more efficient.

This carbon-fixing variant is known as crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and is common in many plants that live in arid environments, with low rainfall and high evaporation of water stored in plant tissues.

CAM plants close the stomata during the day to prevent water loss and open them at night. During the night, therefore, they absorb carbon dioxide from the environment. For this reason, they are perhaps the best plants to keep in the bedroom.

Among these we find succulent and succulent plants, such as i cactus andagave, which require very little care in exchange for a lot of satisfaction.

These are plants that can be grown in pots, to be able to keep them even in the bedroom and that need a bright, warm and dry environment. Succulent and succulent plants must be given very little water, even better if sprayed in small quantities with a sprayer, and irrigations must be spaced out over time.

If, on the other hand, you want to have an elegant flowering plant in the bedroom, you can grow one or more orchid. These beautiful plants give spectacular and long-lasting blooms as long as their needs are respected.

In fact, orchids need a lot of light, abundant but infrequent irrigation and a suitable microclimate, which can be recreated by placing more plants in the same corner of the bedroom or thanks to the nebulizations of water around the leaves.
