These are the oldest pants in the world - they are 3 years old and still incredibly stylish and functional

The oldest trousers ever found, worn about 3 thousand years ago by nomadic shepherds who lived in present-day China, are surprisingly practical and the result of numerous styles and techniques

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

They are more than 3000 years old, but at the time they were considered a fashion icon and still today they do not cease to fascinate: we are talking about a pair of trousers, the oldest ever found. The garment in question was found in 2014 in a burial area in Yanghai, northwest China. But a few months ago an international team of archeologists, paleontologists and stylists revealed that the techniques used to make these pants are very sophisticated and show influences from the different peoples who lived in what was Eurasia.

The techniques and materials used to make them

The trousers found in China have among the 3000 and 3300 years, as confirmed by the tests performed with the carbon 14 dating method but when they were discovered they were preserved in excellent condition. But who did they belong to? According to the scholars, who published their research in the journal Archaeological Research in Asia, they were worn by nomadic shepherds and warriors. Specifically, this pair was found on a mummified body of a man that the researchers renamed Turfan Man as the Yanghai cemetery is located about 40 kilometers south-east of the Chinese city of Turfan.

These brown wool trousers were made with great skill and were specially designed for those who had to ride and therefore had to move with agility. Who built them started from three different pieces of fabric, sewn on each other. For the crotch part of the breeches, a much thicker resistant fabric was used in order to make it easier to climb and ride. But the pair of trousers was not only incredibly practical and functional, but also well finished, as it was enriched with geometric ornaments at the height of the knees. The drawings show intertwined T's, very similar to those that adorned some ancient pottery in Western Siberia and Kazakhstan between 1800-1000 BC

To show how the trousers originally looked, the scholars reconstructed the typical clothing of Turfan Man, turning to an expert raw wool weaver (very similar to the one used for the garment worn by nomadic shepherds of Yanghai).

An item of clothing that is the result of a mix of influences

What surprised the researchers was not only the functionality that characterizes the ancient garment, but the fact that its creation is the result of numerous stylistic influences.

A variety of textile techniques and patterns from different origins, traditions and local eras have merged into something new in this garment - explains archaeologist and project director Mayke Wagner of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin - Central-Eastern Asia it was a laboratory where people, plants, animals, knowledge and experiences came from different directions and sources and were transformed.

A discovery that testifies to the surprising contamination between the peoples of Eurasia.

The man's trousers, known as one of the oldest preserved to date, were made with four different textile techniques, two of which are newly discovered and named "Yanghai dovetail twill tapestry" and "Yanghai weave weave" ". - the researchers add - The fabrics studied are local products showing advances in wool technologies developed in the southern (tapestry) and northern (twill) parts of West Asia, which have been transferred and further refined by wool workers across still areas. unknown in central and northern Eurasia.

These new details confirm how avant-garde Chinese weavers who lived over 3000 years ago were. And that the practicality of an item of clothing was indeed important, but the eye already wanted its part too.
