“There is a boom in disinfectant poisoning”: the Niguarda hospital in Milan warns

The Niguarda Hospital in Milan warns that there is a real boom in disinfectant poisoning caused by misuse and inattention

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Almost everyone these days uses hand or surface disinfectants in an effort to defend themselves as much as possible from the Sars-CoV-2 virus. In some cases, however, these tools can be dangerous. The poison control center of the Niguarda hospital in Milan warns: there is a boom in poisoning from disinfectants.

Disinfectants are useful for keeping germs and bacteria at bay. The problem, as usual, is that we must not exceed in the use but above all that you need to know the correct rules to use them, also making sure that they do not accidentally end up in the hands of children.

The alarm on this point, of which little is said, is the Poison Control Center of the Niguarda Hospital in Milan which warns: from the beginning of the emergency, requests for counseling for disinfectant poisoning increased by about 65% and, if we consider the age group under 5, even 135%.

The attempt to stop the virus therefore induced dangerous behavior and there is some confusion in managing and using these tools. Some people, then, have trusted "do-it-yourself recipes" found online. As Franca Davanzo, Director of the Niguarda Poison Control Center explained, the possibility of making mistakes of lightness is just around the corner:

“There are those who, following online tutorials and“ do-it-yourself recipes ”, prepare mixtures of chemicals that are not compatible with each other. Those who soak the masks with excessive quantities and then wear them, inhaling a high dosage of chemicals. There are also those, and unfortunately the most frequent cases, fill the house with bottles of commercial or handcrafted disinfectants, and leave them, perhaps in unlabeled bottles, within the reach of children. And they are the most exposed, the increase in pediatric poisoning is in fact 135%. Precisely for them we must pay the utmost attention, in fact the little ones find these unattended containers at home and ingest them accidentally ".

The poison control center therefore recommends do not leave containers of disinfectants unattended which can then end up in the hands of children and do not go to the emergency room immediately but before making a call to the poison control center in Milan on 02 66 10 10 29 (or to the poison control center in your city) to explain the emergency situation you are in and to understand if it is strictly necessary to go to the hospital.

We are therefore careful to use disinfectants with caution, avoiding creating further problems for ourselves and the health system already severely tried these days.
