It is known by all as the Estrada Selaròn, in homage to the Chilean painter who tiled this colorful staircase, but officially the staircase is called Manuel Carneiro.

    Selaròn, therefore, regardless of criticism, continued his project, making it become his obsession over time. In order to purchase the materials and finance his work, he even sold his paintings, but in the end he managed to enter the stairs beyond 2 thousand tiles in 125 meters long.

    The work became famous even before Selaròn completed it. In spite of those who criticized it, the staircase liked (and continues to like) the many tourists who came from all over the world to donate tiles. Today, in fact, the staircase is said to have been decorated with tiles from over 60 countries. Among the works depicted there is one pregnant african woman, it has also become a portrait sold in 25 copies since 1977.
