A new wind farm was recently inaugurated in Springbok, a town in the Northern Cape province, in South Africa.
After two years of construction, the facility is ready and will provide clean and affordable energy to thousands of families for the next 20 years.

The Kangnas plant is the latest of five wind farms built in South Africa thanks to the commitment of a consortium led by Leleka, an independent energy producer.

Consisting of 61 turbines, the new plant has a capacity of 140 megawatts, enough to cover the annual needs of 154.625 South African households. Thanks to the five wind farms, families reached by energy renewable are in total 485.000.

“We now have over 600 MW of wind power in operation, which will provide clean electricity to hundreds of thousands of South Africans at an affordable price for the next two decades. Our comprehensive portfolio places Lekela as one of the leading clean and renewable energy providers in the country and across the African continent more broadly, ”explained Chris Antonopoulos, Leleka's CEO.

Thanks to the Kangnas wind farm approximately 550.000 tons of CO2 emissions will be eliminated per year compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants.

“In addition to zero carbon emissions and a reduced use of fossil fuels, South Africa will benefit from practically no water consumption during the production process,” concluded Antonopoulos.
