The global seed bank Svalbard Global Seed Vault is the largest underground repository in the world aimed at protecting the planet's genetic heritage. The bunker owned by the Norwegian government, located near the North Pole precisely to preserve the seeds at sub-zero temperatures, is only opened a few times a year and on this very day there was the first opening of 2022 for the arrival of the first load of the year.

In fact, on 13 February they arrived in Norway, in the presence of the Norwegian Minister of Agriculture and Food Sandra Borch and other political and scientific exponents, the seeds have been sidetracked from 10 gene banks around the world.

Among these are beyond 6000 crop seeds from Morocco, 20s wheat from the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research in Germany as well as over 100 Australian grassland forage species for a total of 20,443 samples of new seeds from Australia, Germany, Morocco, New Zealand, Scandinavian countries, Romania, Slovakia, Uganda and Sudan.

The future of global food and nutrition security depends not only on the genetic diversity we have within major food crops, but also on the diversity of crops that smallholder farmers rely on "

Minister Borch declared that he enthusiastically welcomed the new samples that arrived in 39 boxes. The total samples contained in the Norwegian repository now amount to 1.1 million.

To secure the future of all the world's crops and protect them from natural disasters, the vault of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has been designed in an extremely secure manner and as early as 2017 Norway had invested huge sums of money to strengthen its seed bank. The property is located 130 meters above sea level in a geographical area not subject to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or other natural events of this magnitude. Its tunnels that wind inside the small mountain where the deposit is built are covered with sandstone and are all equipped with emergency generators in the event of a blackout.
