The tragedy of child workers exposed to toxic substances to produce our gold

In the context of a global context of environmental pollution in which we all breathe substances that are potentially dangerous to health every day, there are those who are more at risk than others. They are children, often exploited from a very young age to work in places where their rights are constantly violated, including that of not being subjected to contact with dangerous substances.

Within a global context of environmental pollution in which we all breathe substances that are potentially dangerous to health every day, but there are those who are more at risk than others. They are children, often exploited from a very young age to work in places where their rights are constantly violated, including that of not being subjected to contact with dangerous substances.

It is to put an end to this dramatic situation that Human Rights Watch, an international non-governmental organization that deals with the defense of human rights, submitted to the United Nations a relationship in which immediate action is requested to restore dignity and well-being to the little ones from all over the world. Concrete and urgent actions are needed, first of all stricter measures against companies that exploit children and put their health at risk.

Not many years ago, in 2011, one of the worst environmental disasters occurred which concerned the health of the little ones exposed to dangerous substances: 400 children died in Nigeria from lead poisoning. These were tiny human beings who worked for a few pennies in the gold mines of the area and who were constantly covered in dust containing lead both while they worked and when they returned home.

Unfortunately, this is just one example of many other similar situations in which children fall ill due to contact with dangerous substances, which occurs mainly while they are working. The data from the World Health Organization speak for themselves: 1,7 million children under 5 died in 2012 due to unsanitary environments where they were forced to work and live.

A situation that all of us cannot accept. The position taken by Human Rights Watch is therefore fundamental, presenting a report entitled "Danger, Keep Out! Children’s Exposure to Toxic Substances”Which lists in detail many examples of children who come into contact with dangerous substances every day during their work in the mining, manufacturing, agricultural or other types of businesses.

We talk about the children in Bangladesh who work in the tanneries and wash themselves in the nearby ponds of water contaminated by the waste of these companies, gods children in China who are poisoned by lead to battery factories and foundries or to minors In Africa and, due to work in the gold mines, they become ill when they come into contact with mercury. The United States also has cases of violations of children's rights, Human Rights Watch has documented the use of children as agricultural workers who, as such, they constantly come into contact with toxic fertilizers and pesticides.

An epochal change is what our society OWES to these children but unfortunately, as we already know, it will take time. In the meantime, however, let's not forget to do our part, buying as much food and products as possible from the fair trade which guarantee workers dignity, health and a fair wage.
