The Swedish zoo that will take down all its wolves

By the end of autumn, all wolves in Sweden's Kolmården Wildlife Park will be euthanized. A decision that is unbelievable: after a life in the zoo they will be killed because they are too old and because the structure is not suitable for new ones.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

“They are old and have recently had health problems,” says Filip Johansson in charge of the zoo's animals. But to us, the motivation seems pretty weak to get to kill them all, not that we cheered them to stay locked up in the zoo.

The news was given with a press release released by the zoo which says it is forced to make this decision because the structure is no longer able to meet high standards of animal welfare. It would be argued that the only welfare standards for a wolf would be to live in their natural habitat.

Kolmården, after a long justification on how much the zoo cares about wolves and how beautiful the structure is, comes to the point: by autumn the animals will be killed.

“The current wolves in the zoo have reached a very old age and have recently had health problems. After evaluations by the veterinarian and after an analysis of the structure, it was concluded that we no longer have wolves ".

The zoo says it was "a tough decision to make."

“It is more important to us that the animals we choose are well. The wolves we have now were well adapted, ”continues Filip Johansson.

However, we have a doubt. Isn't it that the zoo wants to kill wolves for fear of new fines? A few years ago, a staff member recklessly entered the pen and was killed by the pack. Checks and sanctions followed, and since 2012 no new wolves have been introduced into the facility.

Numerous animal welfare organizations are asking that the wolves are relocated to other facilities as has happened in the past, it is impossible in this case to think about a reintegration into nature as they have lived in the zoo since they were born.

At the moment, however, the decision to take down the wolves seems irrevocable.
