The study that shows how EU agriculture is in the hands of lobbies (in spite of the environment and health)

European agricultural policy is in the hands of the lobbies, confirms this in a new study

European agriculture increasingly in the hands of lobbies to the detriment of the environment and human health? The question is being asked by new CFA research, based on data from the University of Bremen. How sustainable is our agriculture? Almost for nothing, to continue to protect the interests of a few.

A look at the decisions taken by the European Union on issues such as fertilizers, glyphosate, plague cysts and sustainable agriculture, to understand that in the first place there are never consumers, but always the interests of multinationals.

Everything is told (conditionally) by a new study not yet made public (broadcast tonight on the German broadcaster ARD at 22.50) which establishes that for years progress towards more sustainable agriculture has been effectively blocked, also thanks to characters 'chosen' ad hoc to occupy positions of power in the sector.

Some might argue that it is certainly not new. Unfortunately, we are used to policies that do not put the consumer first: we have clearly seen this when the European Union saved glyphosate and we see it every time we document the exploitation and depletion of resources.

The research of the CFA, which for now is only commented in some media because the publication is not yet available, establishes that there are links between farms, associations and the food industry and the most striking example is that of the ordinance on fertilizers.

For years there has been talk of the pollution of aquifers due to the excessive fertilization of the land with liquid manure. Nitrate in water is considered carcinogenic and particularly harmful to children, yet there are no suitable policies for reducing use. The same thing happens for intensive farming, animals fattened in a few weeks with antibiotics with devastating consequences for human health. For example, the meat industry kills 65 million pigs every year, the same fate for calves, rabbits, chickens and more.

The study was conducted by the NABU and according to Sabine Leopold who writes on Agrarheute, the content was not made public before the broadcast, to avoid that there are preventive complaints and that the parties called in the house, defend themselves a posteriori, so when I'm with my back to the wall.

Vandana Shiva, the Indian scientist and ecologist, often speaks of the lobbies in agriculture who also points out that climate change is caused by our current production methods and consumption styles, which are leading to negative consequences for life on our planet.

According to the FAO, 70 to 90% of global deforestation is caused by industrial agriculture, which in order to make room for its monocultures increasingly destroys the forests to the detriment of indigenous peoples forced to deal with those who want to steal their ancestral lands.
