Not all evils come to harm: in Populonia, a hamlet of Piombino in the province of Livorno and one of the largest and most important Etruscan and Roman cities of antiquity, a storm has brought to the surface a tomb dating back to the Etruscan period complete with human remains in good condition and a rich funerary outfit.

To discover it was the archaeological team Sostratos, engaged in excavations at nearby Venturina Terme, immediately intervened in an emergency on the beach of Baratti following a call from the superintendency. A discovery that archaeologists found at their feet is anything but a foregone conclusion: an Etruscan burial never found and dating back to about the second half of the XNUMXth century BC.

An ancient sculpture was discovered in Molfetta: it is an idol that dates back to the Neolithic period

The ancient inhabited area of Populonia is located in a dominant position on one of the promontories that form the Gulf of Baratti and preserves fortifications of the fifteenth century by the Lords of Piombino, the Appiani, as evidenced by the dragon symbol of the family above the entrance to the village.

The Etruscan burial brought to light is in an earth pit and dates back to the second half of the 15th century BC. It includes overpainted ceramics and common ceramics and a kit consisting of XNUMX perfectly preserved pieces already being studied and cleaned.

And not only that: a very important surprise emerged from the cleaning of a black varnish jar of the splendid funeral kit: on the bottom of the basin of the find, a graffitied epigraph reveals the name of our Etruscan: MI P (E) TRUS, "I am of Petru ".

“An exceptional discovery - say from the archaeological team Sostratos. Now we know much more about the owner of this tomb since his name is attested in the Chiusi, Cortona and Orvieto area between the XNUMXth and XNUMXst centuries BC As soon as the Institute of Paleopathology of the University of Pisa will give us the results on anthropological study on the bones of Petru we can really write a story of our ancestor very close to reality. Baratti never ceases to amaze us! ”.
