A large algae bloom has turned an Australian beach into a bright blue expanse. Bioluminescent algae, commonly called "sea sparkle” (literally spark of the sea), delighted the locals at Tasmania Preservation Bay.

The scientific name of the alga is Noctiluca sparkling and lives in the coastal areas of tropical and subtropical regions. It abounds especially where the ocean current rises to the surface and in areas rich in nutrition.

Noctiluca scintillans generates bioluminescenza when its cells are subjected to an external mechanical stimulus. It is a natural phenomenon: the tiny organisms emit light like defense mechanism to scare off predators.

It can be admired especially in calm waters. Although non-toxic, algae can cause skin irritation.

Here are the spectacular ones images taken in recent days:

    Such an amazing sight … I hope we get to see more of this beautiful #bioluminescence ?#rockycape #discovertasmania #cradlecoasttasmania #instatasmania #tasmania #tasmaniagram #tassiegram #fujifilm_xseries #fujifilmxt10 #aussiephotos #thisistassie #SeeAustralia #Australia_shotz #tassiepics #ig_discover_australia #tasmaniasnorthernexposure #tassieshots

    To say I was excited to finally see some #bioluminescence was an understatement ??#discovertasmania #cradlecoasttasmania #instatasmania #tasmania #tasmaniagram #tassiegram #fujifilm_xseries #fujifilmxt10 #aussiephotos #thisistassie #SeeAustralia #Australia_shotz #tassiepics #ig_discover_australia #tasmaniasnorthernexposure #tassieshots #rockycape

“The whole bay was iridescent blue,” said Brett Chatwin, who lives nearby and photographed the show. “I was amazed, an incredible sight. When it occurs, a big bloom like this acts like a vacuum cleaner, it eats everything ”.

A show that recalls that of the firefly squid, which illuminate the bay of Toyama, on the north coast of Homshu, in Japan.

Yet not all that glitters is gold, and never as in this case is the proverb more apt. Even if it is a natural mechanism, the greater diffusion of these algae is due to the increase in global temperatures and above all to the warming of the oceans.
