The Spanish zoo of horrors where marine animals are dying after being forced to live in the mud

Visitors to the zoo denounce the death of a sea lion and the poor conditions of the animals of Palacio de La Magdalena in Santander

A sea lion lies dead on the ground covered in a black garbage bag, while seals flounder in a puddle of dirty water that has become a pond. Dramatic images are those arriving from the Santander Zoo in the Magdalena Peninsula in Spain that were published by the model Laura Gangoso and that have traveled around the world. Animals once again exploited and kept in poor condition.

There are already several petitions online to ask for the immediate closure of the facility and the relocation of the animals before the worst happens. The zoo is located in Cantabria and is held here sea lions, penguins and seals, without considering the fact that this area is very hot and certainly, these are not animals with such high temperatures.

“This is happening in the public zoo of La Magdalena, in Santander (Cantabria). Sea lions without access to water, closed seals in ponds with dirty water and carcasses on public display. This is the harsh reality of zoos, animals locked up without the freedom or care they deserve ”, writes a user on Instagram where the hashtag # ZoosSonCárceles was also launched.

According to local media reports, some animals were wrapped in plastic bags in the minizoo area and away from their enclosure. But from the City Council of Santander, the Councilor for the Environment, Margarita Rojo, confirms that Lucas, the sea lion who spent two years in this zoo, died of natural causes, as confirmed by the veterinary team responsible for animal care. . The mayor then clarified that "maintenance work is carried out periodically to oxygenate and facilitate the entry of sea water and allow the animals to be in the best possible conditions". Yet from these images it would not seem to look at what conditions they live in:

For this reason, PSOE, Izquierda Unida, Unidas por Santander, PACMA have denounced and asked for explanations on the state of the animals and a court case is also being considered. "We want to know if the minimum standards that this space needs are respected and if what we see in these images is true," they explain. In the meantime, a petition has been launched to ask for the zoo to be closed.

THE PETITION

The petition reads: “The Palacio de la Magdalena, in Santander, is a very popular tourist space for visitors from all over the world. This one has a minizoo, which houses marine animals (penguins, sea lions and seals), in poor condition and in an ecosystem that does not belong to them. A situation that has been going on for decades. The animals have no space, they are sick, apathetic, they do not seem nourished nor do they have the necessary water, because it is full of sand. There is an ecosystem that does not belong to them due to its climatic and environmental conditions ”.

In 2018, the park received nearly 100 visitors throughout the year. Has anyone noticed all this? Now we must act to save the few remaining animals:
