Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Are you baffled by the staggering number of cosmetic products swarming on store shelves? The potential toxicity of many chemical ingredients contained in cosmetics scare you? Do you happen to think about the ecological impact of soaps, detergents and shower gels, which inevitably end up in the drains? If you answered yes to these questions, you are already on the road to Slow Cosmetics.

Julien kaibeck, Author of the book Slow Cosmetics (Edizioni Il Punto d'Incontro, 2014), illustrates some valid reasons why one is worth doing healthier and more ethical choice in cosmetics.

An eye on the environment. Conventional cosmetics make intensive use of synthetic chemistry and petroleum derivatives. These non-biodegradable cosmetic ingredients inevitably have a harmful effect on the environment, especially on aquatic fauna. Slow Cosmétique is natural and ecological, because it is formulated without substances (EDTA, silicones, mineral oils, etc.) whose ecological impact is really too heavy.

What about health? The cosmetics on the market are all strictly controlled by bodies that certify their harmlessness in the short term. Therefore, they do not exist "bad" cosmetic products. Nonetheless, conventional cosmetics that use synthetic chemistry to obtain increasingly efficient formulas contain many questionable ingredients and to date no very long-term studies have been conducted to find out whether these ingredients can be toxic to health if used daily.

Marketing and more marketing. Cosmetics manufacturers invest colossal sums to develop increasingly innovative and effective products. However, this race for excellence has a very specific goal, profit, which has taken precedence over common sense. Look at the advertisements made to promote cosmetics. The messages are subliminal: more beautiful, more glamorous, younger… But the truth is that most cosmetic products simply offer the same thing: comfort, hygiene and surface hydration.

What does the skin need? You don't have to test countless cosmetics to realize that ultimately your skin needs hydration and protection in the first place. For these two essential needs they are sufficient only few natural products. The skin is a living organ that breathes and changes. To keep it fresh, supple and young you need moisturize and protect it. That's all. But it is not necessarily necessary to go in search of an alga at the bottom of the sea or an extract of an Amazonian plant! Vegetable and essential oils, butters, clay, sugar or honey… and let's not forget the importance of facial gymnastics!

Choose wisely. Nowadays, cosmetics are active. It interacts with the skin and promises to change its appearance. However, it doesn't always do it intelligently. The most impressive example is that of creams and anti-wrinkle serums industrial. They promise an effect on wrinkles, but they contain only a tiny amount of active ingredients, immersed in a sea of mineral oils and silicones. Give it a try. Apply on the face of organic jojoba vegetable oil for ten days. Then do the same with the most expensive serum on the market. Do you really think the difference is significant? Does this difference justify the price of the industrial product? And what about the hype around it? It is therefore up to the consumer to ask the right questions.

The Slow Cosmétique advocates a return to the essentialAnd. It reminds us of the authenticity of plants and minerals that are beneficial for our skin and our mood. He does not refuse the pleasure that comes from using beauty products, quite the contrary! Pleasure is in fact an important value for the slow movement.

Quite simply, Slow Cosmétique wants to make consumers rediscover simpler and more environmentally friendly pleasures.
