Vacation, sun, umbrellas, sand castles. The sea is not just holidays, summer and games but it is the privileged stage for learning by experimenting. Born from the collaboration between the Manes Association, the Amendola Guttuso Institute and the CHM Lipu of Ostia, the sea nursery will officially open in January.
From the forest to the sea. The Manes association already boasts another wonderful initiative: the kindergarten in the woods. For two years, the Ostia Antica countryside has become an outdoor class for both children aged 2 to 6 and subsequently for elementary school children.

Even the sea nursery is inspired by outdoor education. The initiative will be officially presented on December 22 at the Mediterranean Habitat Center of the Lipu in Ostia but we asked the master Danilo Casertano, former creator and founder of the Asilo del Bosco, to tell us what the sea nursery school is and what it has to do. special.

Hello master Danilo, can you tell us what the sea nursery is?
It is a one-of-a-kind project for kindergarten that will have the sea and the Roman coast as protagonists throughout the year, places that children will have the opportunity to explore and get to know every day. The ship will sail when lessons resume in January 2017.
How was it born?
It was born from the multi-year collaboration of the Amendola-Guttuso Comprehensive Institute and the Manes Association to which the fundamental participation of CHM Lipu, a naturalistic oasis and literary park, has been added. Born from the desire to redevelop a territory with the strength of ideas, courage and going to enhance the beauty that is sometimes obscured by the stories of the news too hungry for discomfort. It was born from the love for the sea, for Nature and for the place where we grew up. It arises from the observation of reality, of how the beach, the oasis are places frequented all year round, by thousands of people who walk there, who run there, who fish there and who for every day of the working and school week are "Reclaimed" by the presence of children.
What do you do in a nursery by the sea?
Like everything we've done, we'll find out by doing. We consider ourselves experts in Outdoor Education and as such we know that we must proceed with caution and gradualness. Everyone: children, educators, parents we will first of all become familiar with this environment by learning to know its limits and potential. Those who work in this project know the area and outdoor activities perfectly. The teacher Alessandra who will lead the crew comes from years of teaching and from the experience of the kindergarten in the woods. Alessandro Polinori, head of Lipu, is also a great expert in naturalistic interpretation and environmental teaching. The fixed points are the equipped classroom at the Amendola - Guttuso school, the CHM Oasis, the tourist port, Parco Pallotta and obviously the promenade with its free beaches and cliffs.
The Manes association has already given birth to kindergarten and elementary school in the woods. What are the differences with the asylum of the sea?
We have always been active in pedagogical and didactic experimentation. The asylum of the sea goes in the direction of the "genius loci", Ostia is the sea, it is the mouth of the Tiber, it is the port of Rome, we could not fail to do a project here. There is the relationship with the Amendola - Guttuso institute which every year leads us to innovate and discover new possibilities. The different environment will bring different activities but it is still too early to answer precisely, ask me in June!
What games do you play by attending the nursery school of the sea? And what do you learn?
The fields of experience of the Ministry remain our point of reference, the activities will satisfy those national indications. The care of the wild animals of the brackish and marine environment will allow children to know the world around them in a much deeper way than by leafing through a book, a 4d learning! They will learn to know their motor limits by walking on the sand (other than pilates!) And to develop creativity by playing with unstructured materials such as wood, shells and wet sand. They will have to learn to become more independent in dressing and changing, in being members of an adventurous group.

Why should mom and dad choose it as an alternative to the classic kindergarten?
First of all, Health would say Troisi! The marine environment is a panacea for the psychophysical well-being of young and old even in winter. We will have the opportunity to explore many places rich in beauty, knowledge and history. Children need to move, they spend too much time indoors. If they have motor skills for miles how can they last in a few square meters?
What are the advantages for children and parents, both from an educational and relational point of view?
To be able to teach outdoors you need to have an educator-child relationship of at least one to nine and this has great positive repercussions from both a relational and educational point of view. The results we are gathering from the experiences already active demonstrate this.
