It's called Fapil, it has been operating in Portugal for 45 years and makes everyday objects using plastic recovered from the oceans

How much plastic is circulating in the oceans? A lot, too much. Animals that often end up swallowing it or get trapped in it know this well. But a Portuguese company, called Fapil, has decided to use this dangerous waste to produce everyday objects.

The name says it all: the new line launched by Fapil is called Ocean and includes 35 products including brooms, buckets, shovels, laundry baskets, and much more for both domestic and professional use.

In collaboration with Waste Free Oceans which in fact collects waste that wanders in the oceans, Fapil uses plastic from discarded fishing equipment and other kinds to give it new life and in the meantime help clean up the sea.

Recently, the company launched a innovative range of products for the home made with a high percentage of recycled marine plastic, combined with other recycled materials and only a small percentage of virgin plastic. At least 20% of recycled marine litter is used to produce Ocean items.

“Over 100 million tons of plastic waste circulate in the oceans and about 10 million are added every year,” Fapil recalls on its website. “We want our business and processes to be truly sustainable and promote a fairer, healthier and greener present and future. We believe that environmental protection depends on everyone's attention and action in favor, not only of a healthier and more sustainable future, but also of a present with a better quality of life, for all ".

The company's goal is that in the future these items can be made from 100% recycled plastic.

“We will be the first on the market to use fishing nets and ropes, all the material that results from the fishing industry to make household products,” said Fernando Teixeira, president of Fapil.

Instead of ending up in landfills or incinerators, recovered marine litter can thus have a second life.
