Alain Verschueren, Belgian artist and social worker, walks around Brussels wearing a “portable oasis”: a plexiglass mini greenhouse, resting on his shoulders, which wraps him in a bubble of air purified by the aromatic plants inside.
Verschueren, 61, developed the idea 15 years ago, drawing inspiration from the lush oases of Tunisia. The artist's intent was provocative:
It was about creating a bubble that I could lock myself in, to cut myself off a world that I found too boring, too loud or smelly.
the artist told Reuters, adding that, suffering from asthma, she prefers to wear her bubble rather than a normal mask.
As time went by, I noticed that people came to me and talked to me. This isolation has increasingly become a way to connect
At a time when face masks are an indispensable tool to curb the spread of COVID-19, the portable oasis takes on a new function. Passers-by are surprised by the man who wanders among the shops with his head locked in a capsule of thyme, rosemary and lavender plants.

Verschueren said he hopes to encourage people to take better care of the environment, to reduce the need to protect themselves from air and noise pollution.
