Ocean Cleanup has in fact just presented the initial results of its own first aerial exploration with which he flew over the great plastic island of the Pacific. Plastic is piling up more and more between Hawaii and California.

The expedition aims to accurately measure the largest accumulation of plastic waste in the Pacific in preparation for its complete clean-up which must begin before the end of this decade, i.e. by 2020.
According to Ocean Cleanup, to understand how to dismantle the plastic island, you need to look at the problem very closely and recognize it in all its complexity. The project was founded in 2013 by 18-year-old Boyan Slat.

“While we have yet to have a detailed analysis of the results available, I think the situation is far worse than we thought. Cleaning up the ocean therefore becomes even more urgent and we will have to eliminate plastic to avoid the progressive formation of microplastics in the next years".

The hope is to succeed remove at least half of the accumulated plastic over a period of approximately 10 years. Among the most dangerous wastes now found in the ocean are abandoned fishing nets.

The risk is that the solution to the accumulation of plastic waste will not arrive in time, given that a report from last January highlighted that if we continue at this rate oceans will contain more plastic than fish by 2050.
