The Passive Solar House in Val d'Aosta

The Passive Solar House in Val d'Aosta

Cool in summer, warm in winter and self-powered with zero emissions. It is the passive "solar house" conceived by the Milanese architecture studio Albori, which works, with many other projects in addition to this, on the themes of architecture and landscape, and built by Echo-d, a Valle d'Aosta company specialized in sustainable construction, located at 1750 meters above sea level, in the Aosta Valley, behind the small village of Vens.

Fresh in summer, warm in winter e self-powered with zero emissions. And the "Solar house" passive designed by the Milanese architecture studio Dawn, which works, with many other projects besides this one, on the themes of architecture and landscape, and created by echo-d, a Aosta Valley company specializing in sustainable construction, located in 1750 meters of altitudein Valle d'Aosta, behind the small village of Vens, overlooking a mountainous arch that goes from Monte Emilius to the Gran Paradiso massif and the Grivola.

The project, which arises from amazing view that the site offers and by the particular generosity of its sun exposure, provides for a house built with a wooden frame, which constitutes its supporting structure and remains exposed on the south facade, in which all the internal rooms overlook, mostly with windows and open to the sun and the landscape. But above all it is the well-planned use solar energy to make this “Solar house” truly unique.

Solar energy is used here in three different ways: accumulated directly through the windows on the south facade, istored and released more slowly from the mineral salts contained in the PCM glazing (Phase Change Material) that complete the facade itself, and finally transformed into electricity by photovoltaic panels arranged on the cover. The only other energy source used by the house is the wood, which feeds the stove / kitchen on the ground floor. The wood of the structure and the facades is Local larch, without any treatment or painting.

The Solar House of Studio Albori is perfectly designed for ttake advantage of the position of the sun in the sky, with south-facing windows to draw in the warmth of the sun during the winter, but block out the more intense summer sun. There the north facade, on the other hand, has few windows, so as not to disperse the heat that accumulates inside. In short, for those staying in this innovative holiday home, wood and sun will not only provide beams and light, but also electricity, heat and fuel for the stove.
