Pedestrians are still among the most affected victims of road accidents around the world. Inattention by motorists, high speed, poor lighting and pedestrian crossing signals are to be considered the causes of this "massacre" which leaves hundreds of victims on the asphalt every year. Crosswalks can save lives, but their presence is often not enough to slow down motorists. That is why in the city of Grabrik, Croatia, the municipal administration has decided to install a pedestrian crossing in three dimensions.

These are not raised crossings (such as those seen on the streets of the ancient Roman Empire) but rather an optical illusion, which gives the impression that the stripes have their own thickness - this causes motorists to slow down unconsciously and pay more attention to the crossing, making it actually safer. The work was created thanks to the KAkvart artistic competition and was installed in front of a school, on a road frequently crossed by children and teenagers.

The innovative 3D crossing was made with the colors white, black and gray thanks to a technology called "cold plastic", which allows you to maintain the original colors of the work for a long time, without being affected by the passage of machines or bad weather. . In addition, the zebra in three dimensions confers a special aesthetic to the whole street, as the chairman of the Grabrik District Council pointed out on Facebook.

It is not the first time that the optical illusion has been put at the service of road safety: even in some cities of Iceland and in our Trieste it is possible to cross on these fake relief strips, which seem to work well in reducing accidents and victims. .
