Sad ending for the 864 cattle left on board the Karim Allah ship. According to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, the animals should be killed, as they are no longer "suitable for transport".

The odyssey of the 864 stranded cattle that have been stranded at sea on the Karim Allah ship for two months is about to end. The boat has finally docked at the Spanish port of Cartagena. Unfortunately, however, the epilogue is far from rosy. According to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, the animals must be euthanized, as they would no longer be "suitable for transport" due to the inhumane conditions they have been forced to live in during the last two months at sea. In short, according to the ministry, euthanasia remains the only possible way.

Karim Allah, as well as Elbeik (which left with a load of 1.776 animals) left Spain before Christmas and was rejected by various countries due to the outbreaks of bluetongue which has affected numerous animals. Most of these have died and for weeks various animal rights associations and activists have been asking for protection for the other cattle that survived this grueling journey.

But the fate of the poor surviving animals now seems to have been decided, despite the fact that the report of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture does not refer to bluetongue. The communication states that it will be necessary to proceed "with the isolation and slaughter of the animals in accordance with the applicable regulations and, if not, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will do so in a subsidiary manner".

“The report does not mention any serious illnesses that explain why these animals need to be euthanized”- declared Miquel Masramón, the lawyer representing the Talia Shipping Line, the company that owns the boat. - "We have no official information, but we think they will unload the animals and then kill them with electric guns."

The lawyer also announced that he will ask for blood samples to be sent from the cattle to ascertain whether those left alive are infected.

Yet another story, which is added to a series of dramatic accidents, and which confirms that it is no longer possible to continue transporting animals by sea as if they were objects.
