In fact, a study conducted by international researchers has shown that European bees are the starting point for the spread of DWV that is threatening hives all over the world. The study also suggests that it is a man-made pandemic and it didn't happen naturally.
The problem arises from the transport and marketing of bee colonies for the pollination of agricultural crops. The virus, in combination with the Varroa (a parasite that attacks bees), becomes lethal to pollinating insects. Varroa feeds on bee larvae while the virus kills the bees themselves. If we take into account the fact that the Varroa can carry and transmit the DWV virus to bees, we are faced with a double threat to hives. DWV would cause deformities of the abdomen and wings of bees living in hives infested with Varroa.
The researchers point out that this situation adds to existing fears about bee survival, with implications for agriculture, biodiversity, food security, the world economy and human health.
Bees are very important for agriculture but the study shows that their transport from Europe to use them elsewhere as pollinating insects is unfortunately contributing to the spread of viruses and parasites and accelerating their death. The infections concern both bees raised in hives and wild bees.
This is the first study confirming that Europe is the starting point the spread of the dangerous virus that threatens bees. Now the researchers are asking beekeepers above all to monitor the presence of the Varroa parasite among the bees in the hives since this parasite is a vector of the virus itself.
Given that the spread of the pandemic started with the commercial activities of man, experts think that it is precisely man who can intervene to stem the threat, with greater control over the transport of bees. So is this a situation that can at least be partially resolved?
