An immense, colorful one cloud of butterflies. It is not a metaphor but a feast for the eyes. In the United States, weather satellites have immortalized this unusual cloud. It happened a few days ago in Denver.

The great mass of colors has spread throughout the city and in neighboring counties to the point of leaving the meteorologists themselves speechless, initially unable to understand what it was. Among the first hypotheses, the possibility that they were birds intent on migrating to warmer places.

Boulder Meteorological Office clerks originally had excluding insects, since "they rarely produce such radar coherence." However, the idea was soon denied.

It was not the birds that migrated but a huge crowd of butterflies. With the help of the photos posted by users on social media, it became clear that the large moving cloud formed by creatures all flying in the same direction was formed by butterflies.

In fact, we are right in the migration season of the so-called “Painted Lady Butterfly” there vanessa del thistle. At the end of the summer, millions of specimens move south but are unlikely to be sighted because they fly about 500 meters high. These butterflies wait for the arrival of favorable winds, from which they allow themselves to be carried at a speed of 45 kilometers per hour.

With their distinctive orange and black color, butterflies spotted by American radar and weather satellites were moving from the southwestern United States to northern Mexico.

According to scientists' estimates, they covered an area of about 112 km and floated in the air, almost "floating", carried by the winds.

In confirmation of the fact that these were the splendid butterflies, there were also the testimonies of the residents of Denver who in recent weeks have spotted a considerable amount of specimens, intent on flying in groups on the flowers.

In reality this is not a novelty. This moth moves from North Africa (or Central America) every year to reach European countries and periodically this migrazione assumes enormous dimensions for the quantity of specimens. A seemingly fragile creature like the butterfly can travel distances of hundreds or even thousands of km.
