Many animals, as we know, run the risk of become extinct. One of them is undoubtedly theMarsican brown bear, one of the rarest creatures that inhabit our planet. In recent decades, the elegant animal has been on the verge ofextinction, since according to recent estimates there are less than 50 specimens, while up to 1980 there were at least a hundred.

However, despite the efforts of the EU which had recently given the green light to a program aimed at preserving the animals in danger, Life Animal project, this was not enough to safeguard them. Yesterday morning at dawn, in fact, a specimen of Marsican brown bear was found dead by the Guards of the Abruzzo Park in Pescasseroli.

The animal, one female between 15 and 20 years of age she had already given birth to two puppies 16 months ago. The damage is therefore twofold. The bears, despite having passed the weaning stage, will grow up without their mother. Furthermore, being a female still in full reproductive age, she will no longer be able to give life to other specimens.

Despite the ominous news, the hope is that the project, partially financed by theEuropean Union and which will end in 2014, can provide valuable help in the protection of these animals. The initiative in fact involves the installation of electrified fences around beehives and vegetable gardens, in order to deter the beasts in search of food ad get closer to man. Additionally, volunteers will plant fruit trees in all areas where the remaining bears live, encouraging them to look for food in the hills rather than around human settlements.

Unfortunately, the Park President said Giuseppe Rossiwhenever we are faced with such events, we are forced to repeat the same things over and over again. However, it is now completely evident and by now it cannot be postponed for the institutions concerned to take adequate measures if we want this extraordinary and beautiful animal not to leave us forever.

In the meantime, the body of the bear has been placed under judicial seizure and will be subjected to necropsy and then toxicological tests in the next few days to establish the exact causes of death.
