The Universe as a painting by Van Gogh: on display at the Politecnico di Milano the map of the Planck satellite, which depicts the cosmos like Van Gogh's Starry Night. Breathtaking images published in July 2018, but resumed today in an event within the of the cycle 'Art and science', a combination that is anything but contradictory.

'And then we went out to see the stars again': Dante said it before knowing how wonderful the stars could be up close and how unexpected could be the juxtapositions between the arts of which he himself was a brilliant exponent and the "cold" technology. Perhaps this is why the famous phrase from the Divine Comedy is also the title of the event that was held yesterday 21 November at the Milan Polytechnic.

The sequence of views obtained by ESA's (European Space Agency) Planck mission was obtained at increasing frequencies, from 30 to 857 GHz, and for each frequency, the animation shows temperature fluctuations and other variable parameters. The "resemblance" to Van Gogh's starry night is very suggestive and brings us "closer" to our stars a little more.

"Space has always been a source of inspiration for artists and exciting challenges for researchers and scientists - reads the event website - [...] From the origin of the universe to the missions to Mars and Mercury, a journey into new technologies for improve the environment, health and, in general, the well-being of humanity ".

Space exploration seen as a metaphor for a human journey towards knowledge and progress: images and videos that, in a certain sense, speak for themselves.

The cycle of 'Art and Science' meetings has been ongoing since 2017 and other events are planned, even if the calendar of the next ones has not yet been published.
