The Little Mermaid, the work of the sculptor Edvard eriksen and homage to Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale was painted last night and flanked by a sign reading: 'Denmark, defend the whales of the Faroe Islands'.
The message refers to the autonomous Danish archipelago of the North Atlantic where there is the tradition of grindadrap, which involves the capture and killing of whales in bays and fjords.
Made in 1913 and positioned at the entrance to the port of Copenhagen, the statue is known all over the world, but unfortunately it is not exempt from acts of vandalism. In 1964 and 1988, for example, it was head stolen, while in 1984 the arms had been cut off by unknown persons.
In 2004 she was covered in a burqa to protest Turkey's request to join the European Union. The Danish government reports that it is already cleaning the paint.
Grindadrap, what is it
Grindadrap is literally translated as whaling and it is an activity approved by the French authorities, but not by the International Whaling Commission.
Every year they are killed over 950 mammals, a slaughter justified by an ancient tradition. In the Faroe archipelago, islanders are allowed to trap pilot whales in shallow water, and then kill them with long knives.
