The horror behind our jeans: the slavery of Bangladeshi children (PHOTO)

Thousands of children in Bangladesh are forced to work for hours and hours in irregular textile factories, where they sew the jeans and other clothes we wear every day. Thousand of children in Bangladesh they are forced to work for hours and hours in irregular textile factories, where they are engaged in sewing jeans and the other clothes we usually wear. They are only paid 20 cents a day. A new photo report sheds light on the exploitation of child labor and the dark sides of the clothing industry.

The photographer Claudio Montesano Casillas documented what happens inside the clandestine laboratories of the clothing industry in Bangladesh, precisely in the locality of Keraniganj (Dhaka).

In Bangladesh circa 7000 factories they are not subject to security checks. The photos show buildings without emergency exits, fire floors or fire extinguishers. We are located in the vicinity of Rana Plaza, where a fire in a factory in 2013 killed more than 1000 people.

Le irregular factories they produce clothing that will be sold locally but also clothes for major international brands, through subcontracts that make it really difficult to understand what the real origin of the products is.

Visiting these Bangladeshi factories, the photographer took over non-existent safety conditions. There can be up to 15 sewing machines in one room. Here the children, who are forced to work and therefore cannot attend school, take care of all kinds of tasks, from applying sequins to cleaning machinery.

We work every day from sunrise to sunset. About 10 million children between the ages of 14 and 1 are forced to work in Bangladesh, according to UNICEF, but the number is actually much higher.

In official factories, affected by checks by the authorities, safety conditions would be better. A speech that does not apply to clandestine factories, precisely those where the greatest exploitation of minors takes place. A truly tragic reality to which we can try not to contribute by better checking the origin of our clothes.
