Canada ships its horses to Japan for slaughter. Here they will become raw meat sashimi

What we are about to tell you is a monstrous practice that has long been denounced by animal welfare activists: Canada sends its horses to Japan for slaughter. Here they will become 'delicious dishes' and at very high costs of raw meat sashimi, the so-called basashi.

Most people may not be aware of this increasingly thriving trade. Horses arrive in Japan and South Korea after nightmarish journeys, especially as Canada is one of the largest suppliers of horse meat in the world and the industry has millions of dollars in revenue. To pay the consequences are the horses that are no longer needed, or those abandoned by the horse racing and equestrian sports industry.

Last week there were numerous protests over the treatment given to these animals. The horses travel on large wooden crates, they are in confined spaces with no possibility of movement. Crammed for many hours, without water or food, they must stand upright in their own feces.

“We want to raise public awareness of what is happening. Canadian laws say that animals cannot travel this way, but the regulations are being circumvented, ”activists explain to CBS.

Here's how horses are unloaded in Japan:

The victims are animals of just over a year old: they are crammed 4 at a time in crates, without separation between them and loaded into the holds of an airplane. A video shows the terror of these animals as the crates are moved by the maneuvers upon arrival in Japan. Sometimes they are locked in there for many hours before being loaded on the plane and this is already causing them a lot of suffering. What comes next is even worse: the terror of being in the hold of an airplane, with the loud noises and jolts of take-off, flight and landing, in the end, slaughter with presumably brutal methods since there are no precise rules in Japan. .

Here is a documentary on how horses are slaughtered:

"Wealthy Japanese consumers willing to pay very high sums for a plate of raw horse meat sashimi, which must be as fresh as possible and this explains why, instead of slaughtering them in Canada and exporting the meat, these expensive transports are organized" , explains IHP, an independent association that works for the protection of horses and other equidae.

The CHDC Canadian Horse Defense Coalition organizes protests at the Calgary airport and tries to put pressure on the Canadian and Japanese governments, but for now the rumors remain unheard.

“The associations alone cannot oppose the enormous interests at stake: a strong push from public opinion is needed. Certain images cannot be ignored
dichiara Sonny Richichi, president of IHP.
