    The fully knitted children's playground

A children's playground consisting of fully knitted structures, indeed, more than one. It is in fact a reality that has already existed for decades, which was able to come to life thanks to the creativity of a Japanese artist particularly dedicated to knitting and crochet. The colorful sculptures that she initially produced were so loved and appreciated by the little ones that they pushed her to devise real play structures dedicated entirely to them.

Un playground for children consisting of facilities fully knitted, indeed, more than one. It is in fact a reality that has already existed for decades, which was able to come to life thanks to the creativity of aJapanese artist particularly devoted to knitting and crochet. The colorful sculptures that she initially produced were so loved and appreciated by the little ones that they pushed her to to devise real play structures dedicated completely to them.

The Japanese artist, named Toshiko Horiuchi, had the impulse to put his innovative idea into practice after observing how, on the occasion of one of his sculptural exhibitions which took place in different places in Japan, one of the children present had started playing undisturbed, and appearing amused, with one of his own creations. Three years later the artist completed the making of his premieres play structures for children knitted.

They are realized without the use of metal or plastic parts and are completely safe, as well as being soft to the touch, but resistant, and with colorful colors, able to immediately attract the eyes of the little ones. The adventure of Toshiko and her husband, Charles MacAdam, began in 1990 in Canada with the foundation of a company capable of starting the construction of the first entirely knitted playground. The first project was placed inside a national park in the city of Tokyo, with the name of “Park-in-a-Park”, and won an important recognition already in 1992.

The same project, well twenty years away, still offers opportunities for play and fun to the Tokyo city children. Each play structure is made up of nets that guarantee maximum resistance and safety, allowing children to climb, jump and bounce on each of them without any danger. Every part of the structures designed by Toshiko Horiuchi has behind them engineering studies which guarantee its complete reliability, carried out by Norihide Imagawa, one of the most important Japanese experts on the subject. An entire website is dedicated to the creations of Toshiko Horiuchi, to be admired, which can be visited at NetPlayWorks.com.
