There has been no news of the she-wolf and her cubs since last May and it is feared that they were killed by hunters

We have lost track of Naya, the first wolf sighted in Belgium in over 100 years. The she-wolf had traveled from Germany to Belgium early last year, marking the return of wolves to a country that had not been seen for over a century.

The news of Naya's arrival in Belgium was given particular importance because it meant that from that moment wolves, a species considered vulnerable, were again present in every state of continental Europe.

A few months after her arrival, Naya was joined by a male companion, August, and their encounter led to the birth of a litter of wolves.

August he had been caught on night cameras bringing food to Naya and the puppies in May, after which the animal he started acting like he was alone.

Since, neither the cameras nor the tracking device worn by Naya have given more information concerning the she-wolf and her cubs.

Naya's movements could in fact be followed thanks to a radio collar that had been applied to her at the age of six months by the Technical University of Dresden.

According to the naturalistic agency ANB it is virtually certain that Naya and her cubs were illegally killed by hunters.

The Belgian WWF office said in a statement that "The death of the she-wolf and her cubs is a shame for Belgium".

Suspicions about Naya's killing fell on a couple, who were arrested after being spotted by a drone in a prohibited area. The pair were released due to lack of evidence and a local bird protection association offered a prize of € 10.000 dollars to those who will provide information to identify those responsible for Naya's death.
