They were saved one by one: 205 dogs of different sizes and races, locked up in tiny cages, in precarious conditions. Among them, there are also many puppies that would never have reached adult life, because someone had already written their destiny: euthanasia.

But luckily, it didn't happen and this is a story with a happy ending thanks to a mission led by Humane Society of the United States who saved all the dogs kept in a shelter in Puerto Rico from certain death.

The mission was considered the biggest air rescue never happened, especially because the dogs were sentenced to euthanasia due to the overpopulation of strays in shelters, where volunteers complain that they do not have the resources to take care of everyone.

“The shelters in Puerto Rico have no other choice. There is very little space and they have to practice euthanasia. A heartbreaking thing for the staff as well as for all these animals, ”he says Kimberly Alboum, director of the Humane Society of the United States.

For years in Puerto Roco there has been a struggle against scarce funding and the low rate of sterilization, but also against the abandonment that sometimes occurs because there are so many who move to the mainland and do not take pets with them.

What is certain is that euthanasia cannot be the solution.

The dogs found in small cages were transported via Wings of Rescue in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and North Carolina, and sorted to various shelters awaiting adoption. Activists are mobilizing for each of them to find a home and lots of love.
