The city of Krolevers, in Ukraine, is home to an apple orchard that is unique in the world. In fact it consists of only one tree that it would have more than 200 years. This Apple tree it expands by colonizing the soil and has dozens of trunks rooted around the main trunk.

Thus the apple tree becomes somehow immortal. This tree appears to have drawn a survival strategy intelligent to say the least that could allow him to survive for centuries.

Over time, its branches began to bend down and get closer to the ground, until they took root. Whenever one of these trunks dies, its branches bend towards the ground and take root in turn.

In 1970 it had nine trunks but by 2008 the number had doubled. Today it has several main trunks and dozens of rooted branches sprouting from each of them. Its apples, which are locally called Lozovka, have a slightly sour taste and are medium in size.

According to legend, the apple tree was planted from principe Peter Sergeev. When he died, due to mourning, the tree bent its branches towards the ground giving life to a colony of apple trees. The prince, born in 1780, was buried under his beloved tree in 1848, aged 68, and his tombstone is still visible today.

Another version of the legend tells that the prince planted the apple tree near the grave of his wife, who died very young. In 1972 the tree was officially declared national monument. This apple tree is unique in the world and science is still trying to understand its survival mechanisms.
