In 1970 it had nine trunks but by 2008 the number had doubled. Today it has several main trunks and dozens of rooted branches sprouting from each of them. Its apples, which are locally called Lozovka, have a slightly sour taste and are medium in size.
According to legend, the apple tree was planted from principe Peter Sergeev. When he died, due to mourning, the tree bent its branches towards the ground giving life to a colony of apple trees. The prince, born in 1780, was buried under his beloved tree in 1848, aged 68, and his tombstone is still visible today.
Another version of the legend tells that the prince planted the apple tree near the grave of his wife, who died very young. In 1972 the tree was officially declared national monument. This apple tree is unique in the world and science is still trying to understand its survival mechanisms.
