The European Commission has authorized the use of five genetically modified organisms for food and feed within the EU. These are two new licenses for as many varieties of maize and three renewals of authorization, two for maize and one for beet.

Green light for five genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for the use of food and feed. As can be seen from their abbreviation (MON), corn is a product of Monsanto, the world's leading producer of GMOs and one of the most controversial companies in history for the production of pesticides, from glyphosate to dicamba.

The ok does not concern GM plants intended for cultivation but it is about

    two new authorizations:

    • but MON 87427 x MON 89034 x NK603
    • but 1507 x 59122 x MON 810 x NK603

and the renewal of 3 existing authorizations:

    • more DAS-59122-7
    • but GA21
    • sugar beet H7-1

    The Commission explains:

"All these genetically modified organisms have undergone a full authorization procedure, including a favorable scientific evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)".

    Remembering that:

"All Member States had the right to express an opinion in the Standing Committee and subsequently the Appeals Committee, and the result is that the European Commission has the legal support of the Member States to proceed."

The authorizations are valid for 10 years and all products of these genetically modified organisms will be subject to the strict EU labeling and traceability rules, but their presence must be indicated on the label if they exceed 0,9% of the packaged product.

What are GMOs? They are Genetically Modified Organisms, whose DNA has been changed through genetic engineering operations. Today, many foods are: from corn to soy. This brings with it numerous negative aspects: from the emergence of new allergies to the reduction of biodiversity. Not to mention the increase in the use of pesticides and the consequent resistance to antibiotics.

Unfortunately, multinationals now make extensive use of them: GMOs are perfect externally, they grow quickly and therefore allow greater earnings. In recent years, the growing spread of genetically modified crops has led to a significant increase in the use of herbicides, due to weeds that have become increasingly resistant.
