Since 2015, the engineer Amresh Samant has so far managed to create mini forests in 20 villages in the districts of Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara, India, up to an incredible number of 100 trees planted.

From Monday to Friday Amresh Naresh Samant works as an electrical engineer at the main port of Orissa, on the weekend this 46-year-old man dedicates all his efforts to increase the green areas of his region by planting mini forests in the villages with the aim of mitigate the environmental impacts caused by soil erosion and flooding.

Amresh's dedication and commitment gave birth to hope as well as trees. A clear example is the village of Lunukula in the Jagatsinghpur district, which looked barren five years ago. All the greenery had been robbed by a series of natural disasters and the illegal timber trade. Today, the village - home to 2.000 people - has 500 varieties of trees. In the same way, 19 other villages in the area have recovered their greenery.

“When I started this initiative in Lunukula, the villagers were not aware of the importance of trees and green cover. It took me some time to get him to understand why planting trees is so important to maintaining ecological balance. Today they take care of the trees ”, says the Indian engineer in an interview.

Although he had been planting trees for many years, the mini forest project started in 2015. At the beginning he was alone, but little by little and with a lot of patience and persistence he managed to involve local people as well as more than 100 volunteers, succeeding thus to plant between 500 and 1.000 groups of native trees in each village.

His is a real commitment, to complement his efforts he continued to study, but this time the environment and sustainable development, in order to improve his scientific knowledge and be able to apply them in the project.

“Protecting the environment isn't just about planting trees. So I completed a professional path to understand the various aspects of the environment and use my knowledge to increase the green in the region ”, she adds.

Thanks to his actions, Amresh is known by everyone in the area as Brukhya Manab, the Jagatsinghpur forest man who creates his small gramya jungles (rural forests) around the villages, making them greener. Without a doubt, his environmental activism deserves all our admiration and recognition.
