Good news from New York: the Empire State Building, the iconic skyscraper in Manhattan, will be powered entirely by wind and other renewable sources. It will thus become the largest user of green energy in real estate in the entire Big Apple and the United States.

After the renovations a decade ago that already saw a 40% reduction in energy consumption, now, the administration of the Empire State Reality Trust (ESRT) has thus announced that it has signed a new contract with Green Mountain Energy, which means its entire commercial real estate portfolio will run on renewable electricity for at least three years.

And not only that: the ESRT owns many other buildings in the New York city, for a total of about 1 million square meters of surface, now converted to green energy. From now on, all offices will be carbon neutral.

According to reports from The Hill newspaper, in total, the emission of 200 thousand tons of CO2 will be saved: as if every family in New York State turned off all the lights for a whole month.

“We are delighted to be a pioneer in sustainability,” said Dana Robbins Schneider, Director of Energy, Sustainability & ESG at ESRT.

The Empire State Realty Trust also recently achieved the highest possible GRESB 5 Star Rating, widely recognized as the most stringent standard for the sustainability performance of real estate companies and their funds. The company's portfolio was also the first in the United States to achieve the WELL Health-Safety Rating, a third-party verified rating based on operational policies, maintenance protocols, contingency plans and stakeholder training to address issues related to health and safety.
