At the gates of Amsterdam an eco-village is being born that will not need to resort to the energy of the electricity grid or the usual food system. It will become a real model of self-sufficiency and sustainability for the future.

A community of people who have chosen a more sustainable lifestyle than the city frenzy has decided to give life to ReGen Village. It is actually a larger project that will want to include more ecovillages in the Netherlands and the rest of the world.

The idea is to found a new kind of community meant to be completely self-sufficient both from an energy and food point of view as well as with regard to waste recycling, in which there will be no waste.

For example, the compost necessary for the cultivation of fruit and vegetables will be obtained from food waste. Within the ecovillage there will be high-yield organic crops, combined with permaculture and urban forests for the cultivation of fruit trees.

Energy production will take place thanks to a mix of solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind, geothermal and biomass. Thus agricultural waste can be transformed into a source of energy useful for self-sufficiency. A biogas plant will transform non-compostable waste into energy. There will be a system for collecting rainwater and the gray water will be used to irrigate the gardens.

The birth of the project was inspired by a 2013 UN document which saw ecovillages as a sustainable solution to improve the world. The first ecovillage of this project is expected to succeed produce all the energy it needs and at least half the food it needs.

Obviously, for example, it will not be possible to grow bananas or coffee and it will be possible to return the excess energy produced to the local electricity grid. Completion of the eco-village on the outskirts of Amsterdam is scheduled for 2017.
