Touching the effects of pollution first hand can push us to be more aware of the problem and more active in fighting it: for this reason, the young American artist Brandon Seidler chose to show the consequences of chemical pollution exposing the film of photos taken on contaminated sites to the action of those same substances that have poisoned the environment. Thus was born the series of images Impure Photography.

The series consists of photographs that manage to be, at the same time, fascinating and disturbing: showing the corrosive force of some chemical agents, Seidler's altered shots cannot fail to induce the viewer to reflect and question themselves.

Seidler said that the idea of “polluting” the images was born gradually. Fascinated by strong colors and the strange effects produced by chemicals on photos, the artist had spent several years experimenting with the impact of corrosive chemicals on film.

But, precisely, it was pure and simple experimentation, of search for new visual effects.

His approach changed dramatically when he heard about a harmful substance spill in Northern New Jersey, near the university he was attending. The substance in question was methyl methacrylate, one of the agents he had used in the treatment of his photos: this coincidence led him to reflect on the lasting and, in some cases, irreversible impact that certain products have on the nature that surrounds us and to look at his experiments in a different light.

"Most, if not most, of the pollutants can be removed." - he writes Seidler - "But what happens to that initial quantity that is absorbed by the soil or to the plants and animals that are on the site of the spill?"

This is the question that prompted him to immortalize the places where spills occurred and therefore to alter the film using the same substances that have polluted the environment.

"With my work, I do not intend to comment on the practices implemented for the cleaning of these sites." - explains again Seidler - “I am interested in emphasizing instead how harmful some of these chemical pollutants can be."

Seidler is working on the composition and layout of a photographic book based on the Impure photographic series: to finance itself, it also launched a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, which raised more money than desired ($ 2.816 instead of $ 2.500).

"The aim of the book is twofold: to show my work and make people think about the chemicals we introduce into the environment." - he writes Seidler - "If these are the effects that chemicals have on film, what will their effects be on nature?"
