After a decade of incessant protests, Wersut Seguni's Indonesian Traveling Circus Circus, also known as the "cruelest dolphin circus in the world“And to understand the reason for this definition, it is enough to see the images of what happened inside: dolphins in confined spaces forced to stay out of the water and be caressed and fed directly by the hands of visitors as if they were pets.

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment does not renew permits to the traveling circus that used dolphins for its shows. To give the news is the Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project which explains that finally, the marquees of the company Wersut Seguni Indonesia, responsible for the endless suffering and trade in dolphins for the sole purpose of making a show, have officially closed their doors since 5 February.

Activists have been carrying on this battle for over ten years and now the closure of the traveling circus is a win for everyone and shows that things can change. For some time, the Indonesian team of the Dolphin Project had been denouncing the suffering of these animals, first captured from their natural habitat and then enslaved with hard training. Tossed from city to city, transported in tiny, coffin-like tubs on trucks, at any time of the year.

“The dolphins were forced to perform in small tanks filled with chemicals. Five times a day the dolphins performed for the amusement of the audience, who fed them with small pieces of fish during the show. Just kept without food and then approaching visitors looking for something to eat, ”writes Dolphin Project.

Dolphins jumped in circles, played with balls and they 'danced' to the rhythm of blaring music.

We stand against wildlife attractions for the sake of entertainment rather than education. These attractions are a form of animal abuse and exploitation.Animal trainers and showmen frequently engage in negative reinforcement, whipping and striking animals, forcing them to carry out unnatural tricks and demonstrating that the animals can only be “controlled” by pain and fear.Performance in the presence of spectators are likely to cause severe stress to captive wild animals. Loud noise is a well-known stressor; acoustical stress within and outside the human hearing range can cause critical alteration in physiological parameters for captive animals.Animals are often housed in small, barren enclosures and released from their confinement only for a few minutes during their performance and for training sessions. Stress caused by such conditions can cause severe behavioural and physiological problems for captive wild animals.Even worse, society, in particular, children, become desensitised to animal suffering. Minister, all this leads to a negative international image of Indonesia, with tourists returning to their home countries reporting cases of animal abuse rather than highlighting the natural beauty and the rich cultural experiences which Indonesia is so famous for.I am appealing to you, Minister, to join the international movement against the use and abuse of animals in performances, and to pass and enforce laws ending animal shows in captive wildlife facilities. Please take action on behalf of animals, who cannot fend for themselves. Thank you

“This is a historic day for all of us. Since 2009, when the traveling dolphin circus show began, we have worked tirelessly, sending petitions, coordinating protests, attending numerous meetings, lobbying the government and engaging in field research. Today we made history by closing one of the last traveling circuses in the world, ”Femke den Haas, Indonesian campaign manager for the Dolphin Project, says on the organization's blog.

An advertising campaign against exploitation had been carried out, graffiti and murals had even been done at Bali airport and an educational puppet show on the subject, but it was not an easy battle.

“We made a presentation at the American Cultural Center in Jakarta in February 2013, where the Minister of the Environment was present. Our intention was to give a presentation on the traveling dolphin circus and explain the need to close it. Before the event, we received many threats from circus owners who even hired people to intimidate us, even going so far as to chase us into the building. Our founder Ric O'Barry was advised to wear a flak jacket as the situation was out of control, ”continues Femke den Haas.

A bad story that the team left behind, but the road is still uphill because if it is true that the dolphins will no longer be in the traveling circus, the permanent facility in central Java is still open and so now the pressures are to close. definitely this circus too.

“We will continue to monitor this situation to ensure that no dolphins are again transported from town to town. We will remain vigilant and ensure compliance with the law. The Dolphin Project will also continue to campaign to readapt remaining captive dolphins in Indonesia and release those who are suitable candidates, ”writes the project again, which encourages supporters to send a note of gratitude to Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Indonesia's Minister for the Environment for advocating for the cause.
