In the Finnish city of Parikalla, near the Russian border there is a park with over 500 sculptures realized by Veijo Rönkkönen, worker and artist.

Rönkkönen has dedicated his entire life to this park, he was only 16 when he started creating his sculptures. With his first worker's salary at a paper mill in Parikkala, he had bought ten seedlings of apple trees and a bag of cement to create a garden around his family home.

For over fifty years, until his death in 2010, the artist continued to enrich his park with trees and flowers by decorating it with hundreds of sculptures on a human scale and beyond.

Rönkkönen never wanted to meet anyone, so much so that when in 2007 he was awarded the Finland award, his brother attended the awards ceremony. His statues have never moved from the sculpture park, because the artist has always refused to have them exhibited in a Museum.

To those who asked him when he was alive what would become of the sculpture park after his death, he replied that no one would be interested in keeping it in good condition. But he was wrong, the park was bought by a Finnish businessman and art lover, who together with the Union for Rural Culture and Education developed it further. Today, the park is visited by as many as 30 people every year.
