To make their deaf and dumb classmate feel comfortable, everyone learned sign language. It happens in Sarajevo
Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerousHow do you communicate with yours deaf friend? You learn sign language too. This is the story of Zayd, for an six-year-old Bosnian boy, and it's the story of how much a "difference" is a good opportunity for growth.
Son of a still battered Sarajevo, Zejd is deaf since birth. Last September his mother Mirzana enrolled him in a class of the first grade. But it is difficult to integrate here: no one knows sign language, starting with the teacher, Sanela Ljumanovic.
But we do not give up, for heaven's sake !, and so the teacher also went to school to learn that language and be able to communicate with little Zejd. And this would not have been enough ... Lessons, then, also to the rest of the class, so that little friend Zejd would not remain isolated from everyone! And what better opportunity, for little 6-year-olds, than to learn a new thing.
The result? Everyone has learned the basics of sign language and Zejd had such a dose of self-esteem. "Now he is happy and motivated," says the mother. And how can we not believe her?
Now Zejd is slowly learning to read lips and it seems that his friends after school are teaching their parents all the secrets of the new language he has learned.
This is yet another example that it is from children that we should start our ideas. And not just for their benefit. Take from the children the enchantment in things, take from them the sincere smile, take from them the simplicity, their amazement, the joy, the disappointment. Learn to walk behind them, take their own tiny steps and devour the desire to know how to share new things. All time!
