The plastic sea of the Caribbean in a series of shocking photos

We associate the Caraibi a crystal clear sea and multicolored fish. Unfortunately the scenario could be very different and not so much the fish as the color of the sea tons of plastic waste. Some photos of some time ago that portray the waters full of polystyrene and debris show a really worrying situation.

It is said that by 2050 there will be more garbage in the ocean than fish and sadly it seems that we are inexorably approaching that moment, at least judging by the shocking images by Carolina Power taken off the coast of the Cayos Cochinos marine reserve.

Carolina is a photographer particularly focused on the objective of showing the environmental problems that are seriously endangering the planet with the aim of obviously raising public awareness and all of us who, in our own small way, can and must do something.

It is no coincidence that Carolina, next to each photo, asked a question, a real question that we too should ask ourselves every day when we choose to buy products with plastic packaging or when we forget to separate our waste.

Questions such as: “Do you still use plastic bags? Plastic bottles? Plastic wraps on food? "

    Carolina Power writes:

“I challenge every person and every company to keep the trash for a week. Separate your organic and recyclable materials and keep everything else for a week. You will be disgusted by the number of disposable items you use "

In his photos it is in fact possible to see how most of the pollution in the Caribbean sea, as in reality in the rest of the world, comes from polystyrene containers and various types of objects made of plastic.

Most of us buy and use plastic or plastic-wrapped items too lightly, but we don't always stop to think about where all these things go after we throw them away.

Unfortunately the answer, loud and clear, comes from these photos. However, the problem is wider and our washing machines also contribute to sea pollution.

Whenever we wash tank tops, pants, sweaters or any other garment made with synthetic materials, small plastic fibers end up in waterways and then into the sea. Microfibers are so small that plants and fish cannot filter them. Therefore they accumulate contributing to 85% of coastal pollution worldwide.

We use 20 times more plastic today than we did 50 years ago and the numbers continue to rise. We take all of these things into account to make more informed choices.
