Boyan Slat does not stop: Ocean Cleanup, which he founded with the aim of cleaning the oceans of plastic, now also “attacks” the rivers, which supply the large water basins. From the announcement of the new boat for rivers, the first results are beginning to appear.
The very young entrepreneur, who began his battle to clean up the oceans at the age of 19, has already successfully carried out several "businesses" and has now left for rivers, refilling water, but also plastic, of the oceans. River Cleanup was launched in October 2019, already scoring several actions.
The principle is that of Ocean CleanUp Array, a gigantic "pac-man" that had already undergone some changes, eventually settling on a work consisting of a 600-meter-long tube equipped with a sort of 3-meter "rake" capable of capturing waste, just like the video game of the 80s collected all the numerous dots scattered neatly inside a maze.
But cleaning the oceans is not enough if the waste comes from rivers. And so Boyan started to clean up the “sources”, the rivers, with the Interceptor ™ system.
"1.000 of the 100.000 rivers in the world (1%) are responsible for about 80% of the waste that enters the oceans - reads the company website - [...] Interceptor ™ is ecological and 100% solar powered, with integrated lithium-ion batteries that allow it to operate day and night without noise or exhaust fumes ”.
But rivers carry waste "naturally", which only has to be "waited at the gate".

“The system is anchored to the river bed to use its natural flow in order to capture plastic, and is designed for a autonomous operation 24/7, eliminating the need for dangerous manual labor. Its floating barrier […] will not interfere with other ships and will not harm safety or impede the wildlife movement, critical requirements when operating in large rivers. An on-board computer connected to the Internet monitors system performance, energy consumption and component status ”.
River Cleanup has already run the campaign for Klang river (Selangor, Malaysia) and that of Cengkareng drain (Jakarta, Indonesia).
And it promises to don't stop.
