Its pages contain silver or copper nanoparticles, which kill the bacteria present in the water passing through them. In studies of 25 contaminated water sources in South Africa, Ghana and Bangladesh, the paper has successfully removed over 99% of bacteria. The resulting contamination levels are therefore similar to US tap water.
The results were presented at the 250th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, in Boston. Teri Dankovich, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, who developed and tested the book's technology, has explained to the BBC:
“The technology is designed for communities in developing countries, where 663 million people do not have direct access to safe drinking water. All that needs to be done is to tear off a sheet of paper, put it on a support like a filter and pour it through the water of rivers, streams and wells. It gets out of it clean water without bacteria ".
According to tests, each page is capable of purifying up to 100 liters of water. A single book, therefore, would be able to filter a person's entire water supply for four years. The instructions are printed on the pages of the book, in English and in the local language.
Now Dankovich and his colleagues hope to increase the production of the paper, which is currently done by hand. The time has come to transform “Drinkable book” into a mass marketable product.
