After all these months spent in the closet, it's normal for our blankets to smell a little stuffy. How can I get rid of this unpleasant smell?

For a few weeks now the temperatures have dropped, especially in the evening, and throws and blankets return to keep us company and keep us warm on the sofa or bed. Unfortunately, however, it happens that after months of inactivity crammed into the closets or closet, our blankets have a bad closed smell. What to do then to avoid this unpleasant inconvenience that threatens our autumn evenings? Here are some natural remedies that can help us eliminate the stench from our blankets and replace it with a certainly more pleasant perfume.

The most effective natural remedies

  • Marseille soap. Already known to our grandmothers for its stain removal power, Marseille soap can prove to be a valid help in eliminating the stench from our blankets: just dissolve two tablespoons of soap flakes in a basin with warm water, and leave the blanket soak for a few hours in the solution. After rinsing, it will be soft and fragrant. We remind you that this soap can also be prepared at home, with only three ingredients (water, caustic soda and olive oil, to which essential oils can be added to give perfume): here you can find the prescription.
  • Baking soda. If we do not have time to wash our blanket with water or if we are afraid that it will not dry well due to bad weather, we can also proceed with a "dry" cleaning, aimed exclusively at eliminating bad smells. In this case, baking soda can prove to be very useful: it sanitizes, eliminates mites and helps to eliminate even the stench of closed. As for carpets, you will have to sprinkle the entire blanket with baking soda (better to do this with the blanket spread flat on the ground, perhaps on a sheet that we will then wash) and massage the powder on the fabric with your hands or with a brush from soft bristles. About an hour after the treatment, you can vacuum the entire blanket to free it from the baking soda.
  • Lemon juice. To put this remedy into practice, just add half a liter of lemon juice to the usual basin of warm water, which will give a pleasant scented note to our blanket. But be careful if we use this solution to wash dark colored plaids and blankets: the citrus acids could cause the fabric to discolour.
  • Essential oils. We can use essential oils (you can easily buy them in herbal medicine) to deodorize and perfume our blankets, and even in this case we will need some baking soda. It will be enough to combine two tablespoons of bicarbonate with half a liter of water and 25 drops of the essential oil of our choice (we recommend that of lavender, with a strong relaxing and calming power, ideal for the evening because it reconciles sleep and helps you rest better) and pour the mixture obtained into a vaporizer: we will have created an excellent natural deodorant to be sprayed on the blankets to neutralize the stale smell.
  • Apple cider vinegar. Vinegar can also be used instead of actual washing: we recommend that of apples because it has a less strong and penetrating smell than that of wine. In this case, we create a mixture of vinegar, lemon juice and a little bicarbonate: after the foam is finished (the result of the chemical reaction between bicarbonate and lemon) we pour the mixture into a vaporizer and, also in this case, spray it on the whole blanket, which we will then air dry.
