On December 25, 2021, the Antiquarium of the Pompeii excavations reopened to the public. The museum space has been completely renovated according to the conception of the archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri.

THEAntiquarium of the excavations of Pompeii has reopened its doors to offer visitors an exciting immersion in history and art. Just today the archaeological museum was inaugurated by the director general of Mibact museums, Massimo Osanna, with a splendid new layout. In fact, the museum space has been totally renovated and offers a path to discovery of the most relevant finds in the history of the ancient city, from the Samnite age (79th century BC) to the violent eruption of XNUMX AD





“Today a completely renewed space is returned to public use which refers to what was the first museum concept of Amedeo Maiuri and which will constitute an introduction path to the visit of the site” announced Osanna during the inauguration.

The museum, built between 1873 and 1874, had been heavily damaged by the bombs of the Second World War. After the restoration of the archaeologist Maiuri, in 1948 it had reopened on the occasion of the celebration of the 2nd centenary of the excavations of Pompeii. In 1980 the building was again destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1980 which cost the lives of thousands of people. And from that moment until 2016 it remained closed to the public.

The new layout of the Antiquarium of the excavations

From 25 January 2021 the Antiquarium of the excavations returns to shine and to tell a glorious past, also showcasing the most recent discoveries. The new layout of the museum space, curated by Cor arquitectos and Flavia Chiavaroli, favors a strong luminosity and tries to recreate the atmosphere desired by Amedeo Maiuri for the restoration work after the damage related to the war.

The most famous and ancient discoveries of the extraordinary heritage of Pompeii, among which the frescoes of the House of the Golden Bracelet, the silverware of Moregine and the triclinium of the Casa del Menandro, are also combined with the findings of the most recent excavations conducted by the Archaeological Park : from the stucco fragments of the House of Orion, to the treasure of amulets of the House with Garden, ai casts of the two victims of the eruption of 79 AD, found last November in a villa in Civita Giuliana.


As stated on the museum's website, "the visit to the Antiquarium is also accompanied by two digital media, a web-bot, a digital assistant capable of providing simple and clear service information, and an audio narration that accompanies the exhibition itinerary the visitor to discover some points of interest in the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. "

The museum space of Pompeii will remain open from Monday to Friday, from 09.00 to 17.00. The visits will be organized safely, in full compliance with anti-Covid health provisions.
