The Amarena bear and her cubs around the town: the order of the Abruzzese mayor who teaches school

The mayor of Goriano Sicoli has issued an order to protect the Amarena bear and its cubs from the incivility of the town's residents.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

In recent days, the Amarena bear, a specimen of Marsican brown bear, and its 4 cubs have peeped out at Goriano Sicoli, small town in the province of L'Aquila, arousing curiosity among the residents of the area. The animals, in search of food, entered two chicken coops. Many videos and photos bounced on social networks showing bears fleeing from cameras and torches, chased by groups of people.

To escape from prying citizens, the mother bear also climbed a gate near the town's churches, risking harm. This disrespectful attitude towards bears led the mayor of Goriano Sicoli to issue an order to protect them. And this is the only ordinance that we would always like to read (and that Trentino above all should follow…).

The ordinance of the municipality of Goriano Sicoli

Several animal rights activists and citizens have strongly condemned the "bear hunt". To protect the five specimens from acts of incivility and ensure coexistence between bears and the population, the mayor Rodolfo Marganelli has issued an ordinance that prohibits approaching these splendid animals from the Abruzzo National Park.

Here is the text of the ordinance:

It is not the first time that the Amarena bear has been sighted around the inhabited centers of Abruzzo. Last summer several videos of the 5 specimens were circulated in the small hamlet of San Sebastiano dei Marsi. Marsican brown bears are a wonderful species but, unfortunately, endangered.

Over the past 25 years, 63% of specimens have died from humans. When you come across a specimen, you should always limit yourself to admiring it from afar, without chasing or scaring it. Peaceful coexistence is possible and necessary!
