The alternative to the neoliberalism is called awareness, According to Jose Saramago. According to him, it is we who can change the world by following our conscience, thanks to our awareness and our life choices.
From the words of José Saramago enclosed in a speech dedicated to neoliberalism and economic changes it emerges that we can take action to improve the world even if we have no power, if we are not part of the government, if we are not the owners of a multinational and if we do not dominate world speculative finance.
In Saramago's opinion, even if we are none of this and we have no power, we can live in the world to improve it by looking within and making the awareness of what we are, that is human beings, prevail.
“I'm just a human being and I don't want to be more, I want to keep the awareness that what exists in the world belongs to me not as property but on the basis of a sense of responsibility. It belongs to me as the right to know and to know, as the right to intervene and change. This is called conscience, awareness ”- explains Saramago referring to our sense of responsibility towards the world in which we live.
Of course, as Saramago recalls, awareness is not an economic system nor is it a political system or a market law. Yet, in his words, it is precisely the awareness, reflection, debate and in-depth examination of the situation in which we live are fundamental to improve the living conditions of all humanity.
According to Saramago, what is being prepared on this planet is a world designed only for the rich. One wonders, therefore, what will become of the poor. His words invite us not to close our eyes to what is happening in the world and to commit ourselves to change starting from our daily choices, our actions and our words.
