Real family members, dogs and cats, but not only, have been a source of inspiration for some pieces of music. The site MNN has made a sort of top ten, drawing up the ranking of 10 most beautiful foreign songs dedicated by the artists of the musical world to their pets. I Beatles, ‘Martha My Dear’
Paul McCartney wrote "Martha My Dear", inspired by the affection he felt for his old dog, a Old English Sheepdog, adopted in 1965. The song first appeared on the White Album in 1968.
Norah Jones, ‘Man of the Hour’
Norah Jones, on her fourth album, "The Fall", released in 2009, included a ballad written for "the four-legged man of his life". It's not the Saint Bernard on the album cover but Norah's poodle, Ralph.
Freddie Mercury. ‘ Delilah’
Dogs may be man's best friend, but Queen's frontman Freddie Mercury he loved cats dispassionately and had several: Jerry, Tom, Oscar, Tiffany. But the song Delilah, featured in the “Innuendo” album, is dedicated to his favorite cat.
Elvis, ‘Old Shep’
Originally, the song was written in 1933 by Red Foley, who dedicated it to his German Shepherd but was later also recorded by the King of Rock.
Suicide Machines, ‘Sometimes I Don’t Mind’
The punk group Suicide Machines wrote this song dedicating it to a Boston Terrier.
Queen, ‘ All Dead, All Dead’
It seems that Freddie Mercury wasn't the only one who loved cats among Queen. The guitarist Brian May wrote and sang this song when her cat, a dear companion from her childhood, died.
Pinback, ‘Penelope’
"Penelope" is a song by the indie rock band Pinback dedicated to the death, in 2002, of Red fish by bassist Zach Smith.
Henry Gross, ‘Shannon’
"Shannon" was written about the death of the beloved dog of Carl Wilson dei Beach Boy. Wilson was suffering from depression but the lively Irish setter Shannon helped him regain his happiness.
Cat Stevens, ‘I Love My Dog’
This song was the British singer's first single, in 1966. These words already say it all: "I love my dog as much as I love you / But you may fade, my dog will always come through."
The Dillards, ‘Old Blue’
This folk song tells the story of a dog born in Mississippi during the 19th century. It has been recorded by various artists including Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and The Dillards.
